Students see fire trucks flying down McKinley almost every day, but the trucks seldom visit student homes.
Four Ball State University students were not as lucky Wednesday night.
Some time before 11 p.m. a fire started at the house they rent. It began in the chimney and spread to the attic.
The students were not home at the time and nobody was injured, but their lives have been turned upside down.
Less than a month before Finals Week, these students have basically lost any and all possessions they had.
None of the students in the house had renters insurance, which could have assisted in the purchase of replacement items.
Renters insurance is something most students don't think about because they still have the mentality that bad things can't happen to them.
However, as four students learned Wednesday, bad things can and do happen.
Renters insurance policies can start out as cheap as $12 a month, according to Geico's Web site. Many insurance companies allow students to get renters insurance through their parents' home insurance plans.
Even if the policy is $50 or $75 a month, it would still be less expensive than trying to replace everything you own.
Bite the bullet and buy a policy.
Students are beginning to sign leases for houses and apartments next year and should seriously consider and look into getting renters insurance.
Something bad and destructive may never happen to you or your home.
But wouldn't you rather be prepared if it does?
