The chance of the two Indiana schools meeting in the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Tournament championship match is no longer a reality.
No. 15 Loyola University swept IPFW 30-26, 30-26, 30-28 on Friday in Chicago to eliminate the Mastodons in the conference tournament quarterfinals.
Entering the tournament as the No. 4 seed, Loyola had more than a .300 attack percentage in all three games as it out-hit the No. 5 seed IPFW (12-15, 3-7 MIVA) .340 to .156. The Ramblers (17-9, 5-5 MIVA) had two players finish the match with at least 12 kills, including outside attacker George Kamberos, who had a match-high 16 kills.
Loyola will now advance to play the conference regular season champions, No. 11 Ohio State University, in the conference tournament semifinals Thursday in Columbus, Ohio.
This is the second consecutive season Loyola will play Ohio State in the MIVA Tournament semifinals after defeating IPFW in the quarterfinals. In last season's tournament, the Ramblers beat the Mastodons in five games before getting swept by the Buckeyes.
Three of the four teams have already clinched a spot in the conference tournament semifinals.
The final spot will go to the winner of the other quarterfinal match between the No. 3 seed Ball State University and the No. 6 seed Quincy University at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Worthen Arena. The winner of that match will play No. 12 Lewis University, which received a bye in the first round after finishing the regular season in second place, in the semifinals at 5 p.m. Thursday in Columbus, Ohio.
