The Interfraternity and Panhellenic councils, teamed with other student organizations, are signing up people for an event to raise awareness about unclean water and sewage issues in third world countries.
BEHOPETOHER is put together by NURU International, a nonprofit group that "exists to eradicate extreme poverty by holistically empowering rural communities to achieve self-sufficiency and inspiring the developed world to confront the crisis of extreme poverty," according to its Web site.
Alex Perdue, IFC vice president of community outreach, said the IFC and PHC had been working all semester on getting involved in the project and are one of 10 campuses nationwide participating on April 25.
The event starts at 11 a.m. in the Arts and Journalism Building Rm. 175 with a brief video showing participants what will happen and thanking them for their support and help, Perdue said. Then, men will line McKinley Avenue with signs making continuous sentences about the problems with water and sewage in third world countries. Women will walk down McKinley Avenue starting at Emens Auditorium with five gallon buckets on their head, he said. The women will then fill their buckets once they reach the 800 gallon water truck at the bus round about in the commuter lot near LaFollette and walk to the finish line at University Green, he said. The women will trade their dirty buckets of water for a single cup of clean, drinkable water.
The event is being held to show how women in third world countries walk 30 or more minutes each way to a water source two to three times a day to fetch water that is often unclean, Perdue said.
Once at University Green, Billy Williams from NURU International will speak, Perdue said. Other campus and non-campus supporters will be on the Green to show support and promote their products.
Perdue said the greek community wanted to reach out to other groups on campus to get involved. He said the Revolution church will grill hotdogs and provide beverages and the Student Government Association donated $1,000. Mark make-up donated two $200 make-up bags to be raffled in an effort to raise awareness about its Women Empowerment Movement.
Perdue said people from Bhope2her.org would be present to film the event.
Participants can sign up until the day of the event at www.bhope2her.org, Perdue said. Computers will be available the day of the event to sign more participants up.
