GLBT issues, adoption, partner benefits to be focus of Senator Errington's speech

With the changes involving gay marriage occurring in state legislatures such as Vermont and Iowa, Continuum will present Indiana State Senator Sue Errington, who will address civil rights for the gay community.

Errington will discuss legislative issues in the state house that target gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and intersex community and also domestic partner benefits. She also will address health care, property possession and adoption topics.

Continuum co-president Amy Shaw said students should be informed as to what is going on in legislation.

"Students may just go to the health center now, but soon they will graduate and will become direct consumers of health care," she said. "Students can raise their voice about those issues at the speech."

Student can hear Errington discuss changes concerning these topics being made in the national and state legislation.

Continuum is a group for graduate students of all sexualities to express their specific graduate level concerns. The group also aids the graduate students' efforts to develop the skills needed to function as professionals, according to the Ball State Web site.

Continuum co-president Corby Roberson said all people should have simple civil rights such as equal health care.

Errington's lecture is open to the public and will be 7 p.m. Thursday in the L.A. Pittenger Student Center Cardinal Hall C.
