Cities Conference to cover urban growth

The sixth Center for Middletown Studies Small Cities Conference is today through Saturday.

James Connolly, director of the center, said the conference will have two keynote presentations and nine other sessions focusing on this year's theme of urban growth.

Leonard Blusse, a professor at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, will speak tonight at 7:30 p.m. about the role rivers play in developing cities. The other keynote speaker is Richard Longworth, author of "Caught in the Middle," a book about the Midwest region in the era of globalization.

The center uses the conference, which takes place every two years, to build on studies of small- and medium-sized cities and the challenges they face, Connolly said.

Today and Friday's sessions are at the E.B. and Bertha Ball Center. Saturday's will be at Minnetrista. Today and Friday's sessions are open to Ball State faculty, staff and students and registered participants. Saturday's sessions are open to the public.
