BASEBALL: Sophomore wins MAC West Player of the Week award

Leading the Ball State University baseball team to a 20-8 upset of No. 23 Ohio State University and a 3-1 record last week, sophomore Kolbrin Vitek was honored as the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week.Vitek hit .588 with 11 RBI, seven runs, six doubles and three home runs for the week. In addition, he pitched seven innings for the victory Sunday against Western Michigan University. Vitek tied his career high for strikeouts with 11 and matched the longest start of his career.The MAC West Pitcher of the Week was won by Central Michigan University freshman Trent Howard, who threw a shutout of first-place University of Toledo in the second game of its Sunday doubleheader. Bowling Green State University third baseman Derek Spencer was named MAC East Player of the Week and University of Akron freshman Alex Loftin was MAC East Pitcher of the Week.A Ball State player was honored in each of the first seven weeks of the season but did not garner one in the last two weeks.Vitek was named as MAC West Pitcher of the Week earlier in the season, but this is his first career Player of the Week award.
