Dodging glass shards and mud, Hannah Jung walked barefoot all day across campus Thursday.
Jung, a senior physical education and health education major, created a Facebook group encouraging students to go barefoot to bring awareness to the millions of people in developing nations who walk every day without shoes.
The group had over 500 confirmed participants.
The day promoted TOMS, a shoe company that donates shoes to children in need across the world.
According to TOMS, 40 percent of the world goes every day without shoes and many of the infections and diseases that plague this demographic could be remedied by a pair of shoes.
Jung and 20 other participants met at Frog Baby in the afternoon and marched around Shafer Tower, through the Atrium and to the Scramble Light.
Abby Brown, a sophomore social work major, said she had fun answering questions and promoting TOMS.
She said she tries to a part of a lot of days dedicated to causes.
"There are a lot of things that people don't realize are a problem in the world so they just kind of just go along not even realizing what other people are going through."
Jung said she thought the event was effective and hopes people will check out TOMS and buy their shoes and make them a popular thing.
"It's a humbling experience, not wearing your shoes and realizing that people go through this every day and walk so much further and so much longer," Jung said. "It really puts thing in perspective."
