APA has public revealing ceremony

Resurrection of man drives new members' original performance

More than 100 people watched as five students revealed themselves as the newest members of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity Monday.

Orlando Tate, Deontae Vaughn, Daekwon Roberts, Travis Liburd and Rasheed Love wrote and choreographed a performance based on their collective name, Resurrection.

The five sang, danced and chanted a story about the resurrection of a man.

Every member gets a nickname when he is inducted. Orlando "The Catalyst" Tate said the performance represented the struggles the five new members went through in their lives and their revival as inductees into the fraternity. He said he felt privileged and honored to be a member.

Fraternity Vice President Brent Lyle said the group put in a lot of time and hard work rehearsing the performance. Resurrection was working on it since late March, he said.

Every year the group of initiates chooses a name and writes a performance around the name, Lyle said. The ceremony went well, and the fraternity inducts "only the finest," he said.

"It's about giving recognition to the members of the chapter," Lyle said. "It's like a thank you."

Resurrection's performance represented the journey of a man and a spiritual rebirth. He said the reason for the public ceremony was to keep in mind the struggles of the fraternity's founders. Alpha Phi Alpha was founded in 1906 among "extreme racial prejudice," he said.
