FIJI fraternity started the second annual Ride the Purple Valley event with a successful blood drive this week.
Bryan John, Ride Across the Purple Valley chairman, said FIJI registered 42 people for the blood drive and drew 39 units of blood. John said he and co-coordinator David Townsend set a goal of 75 donors. Although they did not reach that goal, they felt the drive was a success.
"We helped save lives and promote FIJI's philanthropy," John said.
Townsend said this was the second year for the Ride the Purple Valley event and the first year for the blood drive. Arrangements were finalized late in February, and Townsend said he wished they had more time to organize and promote the event.
He said John came up with the idea for the blood drive.
"I wanted to start something that would last," John said. "I believe this blood drive is something FIJI will continue to do year after year."
FIJI plans to pair with another campus organization and hold another blood drive in September, John said.
