Zombie apocalypse to begin today

Fourth semester of Humans vs. Zombies attracts 130 students

An insane atomic terrorist set off Muncie's nuclear reactor, twisting people into blood-thirsty zombies.

The game begins for the surviving humans today.

This semester's Humans vs. Zombies game is based on this attack, and today is the first official day of the fourth installment of the game at Ball State University. The objective is for humans to survive the zombie apocalypse.

Faruq Abdurrasheed, administrator of the game, said Humans vs. Zombies is like a game of tag with Nerf guns. This year's game will be slightly different, though, he said.

"We have reintroduced a reward and consequence system that gives everybody equal advantages and hopefully motivates more people to play," Abdurrasheed said.

The creators have begun writing missions for the participants that will evolve the plot of the game.

After the game begins the 130 participants will be involved in day and night combat missions that will reveal more about the terrorist and the game.

Junior psychology major Heather Nowakowski said Human vs. Zombies is a great way to unwind.

"You can be a kid again when you play the game," she said. "You can relieve stress from tests and school and go shoot other players with Nerf guns."

The game this year focuses more on players, allowing the plot to develop as the game develops.

"If you are a human you always need to watch your back and you're paranoid," Nowakowski said, "but if you are a zombie then you only have to eat humans."

Sophomore communications major Daniel Morton said the game is a great way of making lasting friendships.

"There is something about friendship that when you are running away from zombies you are able to make friends for the rest of your life," Morton said.

Abdurrasheed said today will be a free-for-all for zombies and humans alike. Participants do not have to wear their identification band, which increases the excitement.

"There are a lot of people that love zombies," he said. "Some people really, really, really think there will be a zombie outbreak, and we will be prepared."
