From midnight Friday until midnight Saturday, Something Else TV will be producing 24 sketches in 24 hours to benefit Riley's Children Hospital.
Executive Producer Nick Reczynski said the group is determined to get it done. But when it was first suggested, he considered the feat nearly impossible.
Something Else TV challenged itself to produce 24 sketches in 24 hours when it found that Apple's Insomnia Film Festival had been canceled.
The festival was postponed in November and officially canceled in January. Something Else TV was disappointed because it had planned to participate.
"After we first heard about it being postponed, one of our producers suggested making 24 sketches in 24 hours," Reczynski said.
When Insomnia was officially canceled, Something Else TV put this idea into action.
"We waited until after Spring Break to get things started," Reczynski said. "We wanted to do something that was interesting to the community, and something that was charitable."
The group asked people to make pledges to Riley's, which will only be collected if it succeeds in shooting, editing and publishing all 24 sketches.
"There's no way we could not do it now," Something Else TV member Valerie Summey said.
Most of the traditional Something Else sketches are about two and a half minutes long, but sketches for this 24-hour segment will be around a minute or a minute and a half.
"I like this format," Max Papas, head writer for Something Else TV, said. "With the shorter sketches, we can jump right into what's funny. With longer sketches, you usually have more setup for one joke."
Sketches will be posted on the Something Else TV Web site throughout the day on Saturday, with live blogs and updates available.
"I think the theme of these 24 sketches is satiric and totally innovative," Joseph Morris said. "It's about stupidity and failure."
Reczynski said he feels that this segment will serve to teach less experienced members and build camaraderie within the group.
"There's about 40 members, and we expect half of them to participate, the die-hard members," Reczynski said.
The stories have been written, but there will be no prior setup before midnight. The group will meet at 11:30 p.m. Friday.
"We're assuming the first sketch will be up by 2:00 a.m.," Reczynski said. "The very second footage is done, the post-production team will come in to edit it."
With a game plan in mind, Reczynski said he considers the task "daunting but doable."
