MEN'S TENNIS: Cardinals look to open conference play on a good note

While most students will pack up and leave for their Spring Break destinations today, the Ball State University's men's tennis team will be hard at work.

That's because the Cardinals will try to sweep a doubleheader against Chicago State University and Anderson University.

Chicago State is a Mid-American Conference affiliate for men's tennis and will be the Cardinals' first conference challenge. Ball State will take on Chicago State at 1 p.m. and Anderson at 6 p.m. at the YMCA Tennis Center.

Ball State is 5-5 on the year while Chicago State is 0-3 on the year. All five of Ball State's losses have come against Big Ten Conference schools.

Anderson is a Division III team who hasn't played a match all year. The Ravens have six players on their roster, the minimum amount to cover the six singles spots in a match.

"Anderson's coach, Galen Scott, is a good friend of mine," Ball State coach Bill Richards said. "He felt that he had a team that could be more competitive, and I helped him out by giving him a chance to play a Division I team."

The Cardinals are excited about taking their annual trip to the West during Spring Break. This year they will travel to Las Vegas for a match against University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

With a trip to Vegas as a distraction, Richards said, he has found a way to keep the Cardinals focused.

"You threaten them," Richards said. "What we do or don't do at Vegas will be correlated by our performances."
