Initial hearing for student with multiple felony charges set for today

A non-traditional Ball State University student who was arrested on multiple felony charges is set to appear in court today.

James Robertson, 40, will go before Judge Thomas Cannon for his initial hearing, according to court documents. Robertson faces charges of being a habitual offender and carrying a handgun without a license, which was enhanced because of previous felony convictions, court documents said.

Robertson was arrested after a police chase March 18. Police received reports identifying Robertson as the suspect in a gun theft, according to police reports. When police found Robertson, he sped off, but lost control of the vehicle and crashed. Robertson took off on foot, but a police dog caught him, reports said.

Robertson has been in prison at least three times after being convicted on burglary, theft and drug charges, according to the Indiana Department of Corrections Offender Data System.
