Spam forces UCS to disable e-mail

For the second time in a week, an e-mail scam has caused Ball State University Computing Services to disable e-mail services for university accounts for several hours Tuesday night.

Loren Malm, interim assistant vice president of information technology, said two students gave out their accounts' usernames and passwords, which opened the gates for massive amounts of spam. Out-bound messages were returned to the senders, Malm said.

Once scammers have students' passwords, they usually access the accounts, delete all e-mails in the inbox and spam other e-mail users, Malm said.

"We really just want to get the word out to people to not give out their username and password," he said. " We'll try and send out some more alerts to let people know. The most important thing to know is there's scammer out there trying to get that information."

Students whose accounts fall prey to the scam need to contact UCS, Malm said, and UCS will change the passwords to prevent the scammers from re-accessing the accounts. Students who detect a potential scam can forward the message to abuse@bsu.edu, he said.
