Recreation center construction to begin in a few weeks

Weigand Construction won bid, worked on other campus buildings

Students who work out in Irving Gym late at night have nothing to worry about while construction begins in the parking lot outside the building.

Thomas Morrison, associate vice president for Business Affairs, said the Student Recreation and Wellness Center's construction would begin in the upcoming weeks.

Ball State University received bids a couple weeks ago and once the contracts are finalized the construction will begin, he said.

Kevin Kenyon, associate vice president of facilities, planning and management, said nine companies bid on building the center. Weigand Construction won the bid and the contract is being finalized, he said.

Weigand has experience working on university buildings such as the Art and Journalism Building, he said.

The recreation center's construction will begin in Irving's parking lot, he said, but the gym's operation will not be disturbed.

Morrison said when the recreation center was finished, people wanting to work out would move to the new buildings while Irving was being renovated.

The transition will be done by the 2009 Spring Semester, he said.

Kenyon said people who had permits to park in the parking lot were moved, he said.

Junior sports administration major Jessica Smith said people who normally worked out at Irving and parked in the lot next to the gym now park in the lot near Noyer Complex and the Miller College of Business.

She said she hadn't seen any difference in the amount of people who have come to work out since the parking lot has been closed.

Kenyon said bidding for the Irving renovation would begin in the summer.

The project should be finished for Fall 2010, he said.
