Three slates came to the second Student Government Association nomination convention after nobody showed up for the first convention on Feb. 12.
Lynda Wiley, director of the Office of Student Life, said after the first convention that she did not recall a time since at least 1997 that no students announced they would run for SGA.
Because of the absence of slates, Elections Board members decided to have another convention Thursday night.
At the second convention, Elections Board members reviewed the number of signatures each slate received. They took the slates' bonds and checked grades.
Once the slates were approved, Campus Alliance and Andrews-Albritton '08 emerged as the two slates Ball State University students will choose from to lead SGA.
Elections Board President Kyle Johnson said the third slate was disqualified for not meeting a requirement in the elections packet. He said he could not divulge what that requirement was.
As a reflection of the 2008 presidential race, one slate is running on experience, the other on change.
Campus Alliance has two members already in SGA and two who are not. Nobody on Andrews-Albritton '08 has been on Student Senate. Slate members said the inexperience did not bother them because they knew something needed to be done if no current SGA members expressed interest in running at the first time.
Despite the slates' makeup, both agreed SGA was a place for students' voices to be heard. Senators are there to get things accomplished on campus and be a link between them and administrators, both slate members said.
Johnson said he was glad to see students running for office.
"I am pleased we at least had one slate, and it's even better we had two," Johnson said. "I think we have good candidates, and it'll be a good race."
Johnson said the Elections Board now would start preparing for Tuesday's presidential-vice presidential debate.
Elections Board Sheriff Ashley Ford said her task was to watch the slates and make sure they followed the rules.
