The Ball State University track and field team has opted to withdraw from today's Hoosier Hills meet in Bloomington because of sickness.
Assistant coach Steve Rajewsky said the illness and injuries that hindered the team in last week's Meyo Invitational have persisted. They also caught up with head coach Randy Heisler, who has been sick the last several days.
"It's been that time of year," Rajewsky said. "People are sick and banged-up with injuries."
Jenna Schmitmeyer, Katie Johnson and Lanae Stovall are among the key Cardinals who have been under the weather this week. However, Rajewsky said all three are on the mend.
"They're doing much better, and we anticipate them being ready to go this next week and at the MAC," he said.
The Cardinals won't compete until Feb. 22, when they host the Ball State University Quadrangular meet. The Mid-American Conference meet takes place the following week.
"We figured it would be a good week to give them a week off, going into our home meet and ultimately the MAC meet," Rajewsky said.
Rajewsky said he is looking forward to competing at home again in the Ball State University Quadrangular. Home meets are less tiring and demanding than away meets, he said. They also give athletes a chance to perform in front of family, friends and classmates.
The Feb. 22 Ball State University Quadrangular will be the second and final home meet of the year for the Cardinals.
