AT ISSUE: Students made renovations a reality for Ball State

An initiative inspired and driven by students for three years will begin to materialize in March.

Renovation to Irving Gym begins its first phase this semester, representing the interests of Ball State University students and the product of administrators listening to the students' input.

The talk of renovation began in 2005, when then-Student Government President Steve Geraci and his slate showed interest in a new recreation center. While working with administrators, it became clear that renovating Irving would be much cheaper than creating a rec center from scratch.

And so the student contributions began. Thomas Morrison, associate vice president for human resources and state relations, said the renovation plans were really a grassroots effort by students.

Students explained what they wanted and Ball State is going to bring it to them. Morrison said students made it a priority and that they were ones that implemented planning process. Ball State's students made this renovation happen.

Use this as an example: Your voice can be heard and you can make a change in this university. Students backed this project, made it a priority and really encouraged to get it started.

Without student support, this renovation might have taken years more to complete. We sometimes joke that SGA and the university governance system never get anything done. This proves that with enough support and enough initiative, students can make a change.

Students, keep finding issues you care about. Keep telling administrators what you want. Work to really make this your university.
