OUR VIEW: Get educated

AT ISSUE: Students need to attend SGA debate to be able to make well-informed decision when voting Wednesday, Thursday

Two prospective Student Government Association slates will debate at 7 p.m. Monday in the Art and Journalism Building Rm. 175.

One of these slates will be your voice to the administration; they will create legislation that could influence your and future students' experiences at Ball State University.

Each slate has its strengths and weaknesses. We at the Daily News have tried to point out and acknowledge both.

But why listen to us?

Go see for yourself.

Attending the debate will give you a firsthand view of the potential or lack thereof that each slate possesses. Voting for the slates opens at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday ends Thursday at 6:45 p.m.

Last year U.N.I.T.E.D. Initiative won by fewer than 300 votes.

It seems that close election results are becoming rather common in Muncie. With the mayoral race decided by nine votes and SGA's slim margin, students should have a newfound respect for the democratic process.

Part of being involved in the democratic process requires a certain level of education and knowledge about the people who are running, what they want to do and how likely it is that those things will be accomplished.

Considering the speed at which both slates were formed, it is perhaps more important this year more than ever to listen with a critical ear about what they want to do and who they want to help.

Remember, SGA gets a portion of student fees to do with what they see fit.

We don't know about you, but we want to make sure that our money isn't frittered away on frivolous things like fireworks and other such novelties. We want to see that money used to help students along in their daily lives.

Go out, get educated and, when the time comes, vote.
