For the second time in less than a month, a Ball State University men's volleyball player received a conference award.
Middle attacker J.D. Gasparovic was named the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association Player of the Week on Tuesday.
Making his fifth career start, the freshman had 14 kills and a match-high 13 blocks in a five game win against then-No. 14 George Mason University on Friday. Gasparovic followed up that performance with 11 kills in a sweep against Rutgers-Newark University on Saturday.
"I had a pretty good feeling about him winning the award this week because his numbers were so successful this week," coach Joel Walton said.
This is the second time this season a Cardinal has been named MIVA Player of the Week. Prior to this week, setter Ethan Pheister won the award Jan. 29.
Walton said it was nice for Gasparovic to win the award, especially after Walton called him out for his poor offensive performance in a loss to then-No. 7 Stanford University two weeks ago.
He also said Gasparovic will start against No. 8 Ohio State University at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Worthen Arena.
"Right now he is still the starter and he will be the starter as long as he's playing well," Walton said.
