MEN'S GOLF: BSU finishes 13th at UNT Classic

Cards beat one team as junior Ben Lakoff leads team with 227

Even though the weather was warm and sunny, the Ball State University men's golf team finished 13th out of 14 teams in its trip to Puerto Vallarta, Mexico.

Playing internationally for the first time in collegiate competition, the Cardinals competed at the Flamingos Golf Club. The North Texas/GADO Classic featured 14 American universities and three Mexican amateur teams.

Ball State defeated Eastern Illinois University, who was the one other northern school playing in the tournament. Despite the early spring break vacation, however, Ball State was unable to hit the ball consistently well.

Junior Ben Lakoff who shot a 77, 71 and 79 led Ball State. He tied for 42nd place individually. Sophomore Ross Cosat finished close behind Lakoff, carding a 77, 75 and 76 to tie for 44th place.

All five golfers finished between 42nd and 66th place. With a team-combined score of 916, the Cardinals finished 68 strokes behind winner University of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Ball State's next tournament will be March 16 at the Pinehurst Invitational in Pinehurst, N.C.
