Humans vs. Zombies strikes back

Game organizers to have callout meeting for interested students

Just in time for midterms, the undead are preparing to take over Ball State University.

Organizers of this semester's Humans versus Zombies game will host an informational meeting at 10:30 p.m. at the Atrium.

Game Moderator Adam Huston said the meeting would describe the game for newcomers and address possible changes to the rules.

Huston said moderators would use players' feedback to decide whether to ban bicycles and roller skates as safe zones.

Web site Technician Brian Bauman said some players felt apathetic at the end of last semester's game because of abuse of safe zones. Humans would stand on skateboards for cigarette breaks or walk between classes off campus to avoid becoming zombie prey.

Huston said the game would run for five or six days to help prevent player apathy. He said conditions at Ball State, such as the close proximity of campus buildings, makes gameplay more conservative.

Bauman said players would have a shorter, two-week period in which to register before the game starts.

He said about 100 players signed up on the game database last semester but decided to not participate once the game began, causing moderators to plan missions for players based on inaccurate figures.

Moderators hope about 375 players will participate this semester, Bauman said.

According to the Ball State Humans versus Zombies Web site, all players begin as humans, with one to three players randomly chosen to play the "Original Zombies." Zombies tag human players and turn them into zombies. Zombies must tag and feed on a human every 48 hours, otherwise they die and leave the game.

Humans defend themselves with soft weaponry such as Nerf guns or balls of socks, according to the Web site. Zombies hit by humans are stunned for 15 minutes, unable to interfere with gameplay.

Huston said registration will begin March 1.
