Four members of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars volunteered their efforts to help the less fortunate in Muncie and around the world Saturday morning.
Nicole Rambeau, Lauren Steinmetz, Dan Sullivan and Nicole Tavernier participated in NSCS's February service project at Muncie Mission's New Life Center.
Rambeau, NSCS president, said the four students sorted and organized clothes, shoes and household items from the center's dumpster of donations.
Items in good condition will be sold at one of Muncie Mission's Attic Window thrift stores, and clothes that are not in good enough shape to sell will be sent to third-world countries, Rambeau said.
Each box held a surprise because no one knew how long the boxes of donations had been there, Rambeau said.
"Some of the boxes were really dirty," she said. "A lot had cobwebs and a lot of dust flying around. There were even bugs in one of the boxes."
Sorting through the donations wasn't without its perks; the group had some laughs when they found some unusual clothing from the '70s, Rambeau said.
"It's like hanging out with friends," she said. "It's more of a social thing than people realize."
Tavernier, a sophomore architecture major, said four hours of effort seemed less than enough when it came to the big picture.
"The most difficult part of the project was probably having to walk away," Tavernier said. "When we were done we felt like we hadn't even put a dent into all of the clothes that needed to be sorted through. I wish we could have made a more significant impact."
