An investigation of Delta Tau Delta fraternity has determined that about five members of the organization violated an alcohol prohibition, Interfraternity Council President Cody Willis said.
According to a press release from the fraternity's headquarters, the Ball State University chapter is not allowed to have alcohol on its property until August 2009. The fraternity was put on prohibition after a membership review in early January in which 19 of its 56 members were expelled.
Cara Luyster, assistant director of Student Life, said at the beginning of the alcohol investigation, the office heard five to 10 fraternity members had alcohol on the chapter's property.
Student Life spoke with Delta Tau Delta President Kyle Pfeifer, chapter members and "other individuals with information," Luyster said.
Willis said the problem will be handled within the fraternity because only a few people had alcohol.
"It is something that can be handled internally with the chapter's review board," he said.
Luyster said Student Life would not hold the chapter as a whole accountable because a small group of people within the organization violated the rule. The incident is a chapter violation, she said, and the chapter's honor board will review the fraternity members found with alcohol.
Each fraternity and sorority has an honor board, she said, and it is a way for fraternities and sororities to hold their members accountable for their actions.
The punishment filled by Delta Tau Delta's honor board is confidential, Luyster said, but the fraternity has issued punishment.
"They have held them accountable," she said.
Pfeifer did not return phone calls placed Sunday evening.
Garth Eberhart, spokesman for Delta Tau Delta's headquarters, said the fraternity would not comment on the investigation until it speaks with Pfeifer.
The headquarters originally reviewed the Ball State chapter after two of its members were arrested in connection with a burglary at Theta Chi fraternity's house in November.
Gene Burton, director of public safety, said in a November interview police arrested Dustin Koch and James Finn after officers found paddles, trophies, composite photos and a flag in Finn's room the day after Theta Chi reported the burglary.
