WOMEN'S BASKETBALL: Freshman selected as MAC West Division Player of the Week

Entering the first two games of Mid-American Conference play, few would have predicted that Ball State University's leading scorer would be a freshman.

After averaging 20 points, 7.5 rebounds and leading the women's basketball team to a 2-0 start to open the conference season, Emily Maggert was selected by the conference office as the MAC West Division player of the week Monday. Maggert is the first Cardinals freshman since Johna Goff in 2000 to win the weekly honor.

"We knew coming in, even though she's new, she was going to make an immediate impact." acting head coach Lisa McDonald said. "After she has gotten some game experience, she understands more how effective she can be."

Maggert recorded 24 points and nine rebounds against Western Michigan University in her MAC debut. She then followed that performance with 16 points at Northern Illinois University.

"Everyone has been telling me to play my game," Maggert said.

Maggert has seen more playing time than any of the three other freshmen on the Cardinals' roster, averaging 20.7 minutes per game.

McDonald said the experience Maggert received in the non-conference season has built the freshman's confidence and contributed to her hot start in the MAC portion of the year.

"Her success in the first week of MAC play is huge," McDonald said. "We have challenged her all season. She is going to be an incredible MAC player not just in the future, but now."
