Saturday's swimming and diving meet at Eastern Michigan University got off to the opposite start of the previous week's meet for Ball State University.
Against Illinois State University on Jan. 19, the Cardinals' women won the first 10 events of the day en route to a victory. Saturday, the men and women lost their first 10 events, en route to losses to the Eagles.
"That shows the strength of Eastern Michigan," co-coach Bob Thomas said.
The Ball State women lost 167.5 to 127.5, while the men's team lost 196 to 95.
Freshman Maria Gramelspacher broke the Eagles' winning streak with a win in the meet's 11th event, the women's 200-yard butterfly, with a time of 2:06.34. She also posted the Cardinals' second win with a 5:09.86 finish in the 500-yard freestyle, the 23rd event of the meet.
Gramelspacher was also part of the women's 400-yard freestyle relay winning team.
The victory in the relay was part of five consecutive victories for the Cardinals in the final five events.
Thomas said the meet was not about the team's performance but about the individuals.
Co-coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said the most important thing is that the team prepares for the Mid-American Conference championships. The team is preparing well and overall did well at Saturday's meet, she said.
"I think our women and men did very well," she said. "We just got out powered."
