SWIMMING AND DIVING: Cardinals sweep dual meets

Fast start in relays lead to momentum for Ball State's wins

The Ball State University swimming and diving teams took control of Friday's meet from the beginning and maintained the control en route to a sweep of the meet.

The Cardinals men's and women's teams both swept the dual meets as they defeated IUPUI, Western Illinois University and St. Louis University in Indianapolis.

Ball State began the meet by winning the 200-yard medley relay on both the men's and women's sides of the competition.

"We went in and took control," co-coach Laura Seibold-Caudill said.

By coming out strong to begin the meet, Seibold-Caudill said, the Cardinals gained confidence that helped lead to the wins.

Co-coach Bob Thomas said confidence is an important aspect of swimming.

"It means a lot," he said. "You need to go into a race feeling positive about what you've done and what you are capable of."

With the elevated confidence level, the Cardinals won 13 of the next 15 women's events. The men also went on to win five events.

Sophomore Emily Hurst led Ball State with three wins, in the 100-yard breaststroke, 200-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley.

The Cardinals also picked up multiple wins on the women's side by senior Stephanie Paul and freshman Maria Gramelspacher. Junior Erika Paul, junior Megan Ploetz, sophomore Mary Ehresman and sophomore Sarah Kehe also picked up wins.

Senior Ryan Franklin led the men's team by winning the 100-yard breaststroke and 200-yard breaststroke.

Sophomores Ben Battjes and Austin Laska also picked up wins for Ball State.

"I think we really did well, better than expected," Seibold-Caudill said.
