Sororities consider housing

Panhellenic Council discusses places for members to live

Fraternity row will have to get a new name now that the Panhellenic Council is discussing having housing for sorority members, Director of Student Life Lynda Wiley said.

Former Panhellenic Council President Deanna Pogorelc said the idea of moving sororities into a house was presented last year as a part of a larger plan.

Wiley said because Dehority Complex was being renovated, four sororities had to move into a different location.

"When they started there were four sororities that needed to move," she said, "so we moved them into some residential homes adjacent to campus that the university owns."

Panhellenic Council President Amanda Hendrix said the four sororities that were living in university housing were Phi Mu, Alpha Gamma Delta, Sigma Kappa and Kappa Alpha Theta.

Wiley said PHC thought Dehority Complex would serve as a good spot for all the sororities but instead the Honors College would move into the housing facility.

Hendrix said the PHC must consider all the available options for the sororities' future locations.

Pogorelc said moving the sororities off campus was one of the eight aspects of a five-year plan presented last year, which had the ultimate goal of every sorority having a house.

Wiley said safety had been discussed for the current sororities in houses and for future plans.

"The current houses have alarms and public safety does extra patrols," Wiley said. "The students know that if they see anything suspicious to call campus police."

Wiley said sorority housing was an attractive possibility, but nothing could be confirmed yet.

"It is still in the exploratory stages," she said.

Wiley said not only were the sorority members being asked about the possibility, but also the advisers and alumni were polled over the summer as well.

The Office of Student Life said it was trying to assess the possibilities and reach a consensus between the members.
