Ball State University's endowment fundraising ranks in the top four Mid-American Conference schools and is in the top 35 percent of 785 schools studied within the United States and Canada.
Students should take pride in the university for its ability to remain ahead of the curve and secure funds for the future.
However, the concept of endowment money is a little involved, so here is a breakdown of the nuts and bolts.
Endowments come from donations of alumni or outside groups. The money is used toward scholarships, extracurricular activities and the Museum of Art.
If managed properly, the money should be available for five generations, university officials said. Between 2006 and 2007 the university increased the amount of endowment available by 16 percent, bringing the total amount to $198 million.
The tricky part with money, however, is to maintain a balance between receiving and spending.
While we've done well so far, administrators should remember to maintain the balance and perhaps increase contact with alumni to add to the money at our disposal.
It is more difficult for state universities to receive substantial donations from alumni because we receive funding from the state.
However, we've gotten this far; why not be top in the MAC?
It's feasible for Ball State to beat out the schools ahead of us. The top ranked MAC school is at $300 million ... let's call Letterman up and see how he's doing. While we're at it, let's talk to Papa John's Founder John Schnatter, too. He hasn't been around for a while.
Or we could look inward.
We know graduation seems far off, but you'll be alumni soon. When configuring your monthly budget with the new job you received with help from your shiny degree, think about Ball State.
You likely spent at least four years at this university, which is a substantial amount of time. The time you spent here and the activities you participated in helped mold you into who you are.
We understand if it takes a little bit of time to get in a position where you can make small donations to the university. But try to keep it in mind for your future.
Prospective students fall in love with the university because of what it has now.
Help make their experience as enjoyable as yours was.
