We've often pointed the finger at Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins for the shortcomings of his department.
However, in the wake of recent events, the Daily News editorial board is willing to give him one last chance.
President Jo Ann Gora, Tony Proudfoot, associate vice president for marketing and communications, and Collins called a press conference Tuesday and invited media from the university and Muncie to attend.
At the conference, officials announced the complete restructuring of the athletic department with the goal being better communication within and beyond the department.
Collins, this is your time to shine.
You've rearranged, reassigned and revamped the department to your liking and now is your chance to show the university what you have to offer,
The Ronny Thompson fiasco is over and everyone involved is legally bound to stay quiet, the drug test results and scandal have become distant memories and the football team made the university proud.
The only associate athletic director you've hired, Karin Lee, is now your second in command, all marketing responsibilities are now within the university and now you're out of excuses.
We think consolidating the management of 14 athletic teams into the hands of one person is risky, but she's your hire and you have faith in her abilities.
We've watched, waited and called for your job a few times but now that you've arranged the department to your liking perhaps your fortunes will improve.
However, if the restructure fails, we wonder what will happen next.
Gora has obviously placed a lot of faith in your abilities and judgment because she has given you the latitude to overhaul the athletic department as we know it.
Whether you prove your critics wrong in the long run or prove them right, it's all in your hands now.
If you can't make things work now, we wonder if Gora will still support you.
