AT ISSUE: Board of Trustees should focus efforts of newly created board

Ball State University's Board of Trustees created a diversity committee at its meeting Friday.

Although the committee was only created in response to state legislation and not because of racial and diversity issues Ball State has experienced, we still think it's a good idea.

However, we offer some advice to those in charge of the multicultural committee.

The parameters of the committee are broad, so hone in the purpose of the group.

Whether it's establishing support groups, reevaluating the purpose of the Multicultural Center or developing new ways to recruit students, give yourselves some direction so that something gets accomplished.

Another crucial element of this committee is to consider what the word diversity means to you and consider what it means to the students on campus.

They are the ones who will ultimately benefit or suffer from the actions taken by the group.

One of the four goals of the committee is to recruit and retain diverse students. Accomplishing this goal should be the highest priority.

Eventually the university's efforts to recruit diverse students will come to fruition and campus will be a kaleidoscope.

We need to ensure that these students have a safe, supportive environment in which to attend class if we expect them to stay.

Students understand that as professors you have many commitments vying for your time, but this is an important committee and it has the potential to do great things. Devote enough time and energy so that it can fulfill its potential.

A blank slate lies ahead of the committee, and they hold the chalk. All we can do is watch and wait.
