Housing rates to go up

Trustees approve 3.7 percent budget increase for 2008-2009 school year

Students who live on Ball State University's campus can expect an increase in room and board costs for the second year in a row.

Alan Hargrave, director of housing and residence life, said the Board of Trustees has increased the room and board budget by 3.7 percent for the 2008-2009 school year.

Director of University Communications Kevin Burke said the rate increase will not affect the rates for the 2008 Spring Semester.

Hargrave said the Board of Trustees increased the rates most recently because of the expected increases in the minimum wage and an expected increase of full-time staff, he said.

"We have to budget for that increase when it kicks in," Hargrave said.Hargrave said the increased price of gasoline is another factor for increasing room and board.

The higher gasoline costs, the more it costs for the delivery of food, Hargrave said.

Disposable item prices such as plastic forks and knives also increase in price as petroleum prices increase, he said.

"The room and board are greatly tied to the expenses," Hargrave said.

Hargrave said the rates are in the middle of the pack when compared to other schools in the Mid-American Conference and universities in Indiana.

"We don't want to be the most expensive, but we want to fund the projects," he said. The projects that are needed to be funded include the newly renovated structures of Park Hall.
