Headquarters silences leader of fraternity

Delta Tau Delta prohibits chapter president from discussing review

Delta Tau Delta International Headquarters has prohibited the president of the Ball State University chapter from discussing the expulsion or suspension of almost half of the fraternity's members.

Chapter President Kyle Pfeifer could not comment on any matters involving the fraternity without permission from headquarters, he said before the Interfraternity Council meeting Thursday.

"I'm not trying to dodge questions," Pfeifer said. "I just can't talk about anything without the national [headquarter's] permission."

Cara Luyster, assistant director of Student Life, said in a Tuesday interview the headquarters expelled 19 members and suspended seven more from the Ball State chapter.

Lynda Wiley, director of Student Life, said there were 56 members in the fraternity before the review.

Luyster said the headquarters interviewed members to determine whether they were fit to be in the fraternity.

The headquarters lifted the suspension on activities it had placed on the chapter in December, Luyster said. Although the headquarters lifted the suspension, Ball State will prohibit alcohol on the fraternity's property until 2009, she said.

Wiley said the university will work with Delta Tau Delta to monitor its prohibition.

"In general terms, what we do when we have any kind of restriction on a group is we work with the individuals in the chapters so they understand what is outlined - what the sanction was, and how it will be administered."

Delta Tau Delta was investigated after Ball State police arrested two of its members in connection with a burglar at Theta Chi fraternity house in November.

A Ball State student filed civil charges against the fraternity in April after he was assaulted on the chapter's property.
