Delta Tau Delta International Fraternity expelled 19 members from its Ball State University chapter, and it suspended seven after an examination to determine whether they were qualified to be members, said Cara Luyster, assistant director of student life.
Luyster said each member of the fraternity was required to attend an interview session with representatives from the fraternity's headquarters to determine whether they were fit to be members.
"The membership review was a direct result of a variety of risk-management concerns, conduct issues and poor academic performance," she said. "I do not have specifics, but typically the questions center around their commitment to the fraternity, their understanding of the fraternity's values, their academic performance and individual conduct and behavior."
Phone calls to fraternity chapter president Kyle Pfeifer were not returned Tuesday.
Delta Tau Delta underwent the review Jan. 5 after Ball State police arrested two of its members in connection with a burglary at Theta Chi fraternity house, Luyster said. The results of the review were announced to the fraternity's members Saturday, she said.
Gene Burton said in a previous interview Dustin Koch and James Finn were arrested in November after police found paddles, trophies, composite photos and a flag, which Theta Chi reported stolen the day before, in Finn's room.
The fraternity's headquarters suspended the organization's activities during the investigation, but the headquarters has lifted the suspension, Luyster said.
The university has administered sanctions against the fraternity as well, Luyster said.
Delta Tau Delta is forbidden to have alcohol or have events with alcohol on its property through August 2009, she said. If the fraternity wants to have an event with alcohol, it may only do so at a "pre-approved, third-party location," she said.
Luyster said the university worked with the fraternity's headquarters throughout the review process. Ball State provided members' academic records, judicial records and a signed consent waiver to the headquarters, she said.
