FOOTBALL: Bowl trip to finish with debt

Ball State likely will lose money by playing in postseason game

Playing in the International Bowl is going to cost Ball State University financially.

Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Tom Collins said the expenses of traveling to the game with the team, band, cheerleaders and staff will cost Ball State more than it made for the game.

"It is going to cost us money to go to the bowl game," Collins said.

It will take two to three weeks before the university knows how much the trip ended up costing, Collins said.

The university could also have the expense of paying for unsold tickets from Ball State's allotment of 10,000.

The number of tickets sold for the International Bowl by Ball State is still being finalized, Ticket Manager Rob Richards said.

It will take a couple days for the ticket office to finish counting how many tickets Ball State sold, Richards said. The office still has to add the number of tickets sold in Toronto and the tickets sold through the Alumni Association to its total, he said.

Richards said he would not estimate how many tickets Ball State sold until he had a better idea of the actual number.

However, he said whatever the number ends up being, it will not completely represent how many Ball State fans were at the game.

The official number from Ball State will be smaller than the actual number of fans because a lot of fans bought tickets through Ticketmaster and the bowl, Richards said. The ticket office's number will not reflect the number of tickets sold outside the university, he said.

The overall attendance of the game was 31,455.

Collins said he was pleased by the number of Ball State fans at the game.

Fans also bought more than 500 tickets and donated them back to the university, he said. Even fans in Toronto donated tickets to the university, Collins said.

Fans from Toronto also attended the game and sat near the Ball State sections. A few of the Canadians "chirped" along with Ball State fans on defensive third downs.

Richards said he received nothing but positive feedback from everyone involved in the bowl process.
