Birthing clinic continues stork search

For two months a wooden bird's leg out front of a Muncie birthing clinic has been without the rest of its body.

Barb Bechtel, certified nurse and midwife for Expectations Women's Health & Birthing Center, said the center is thinking about reaching out to Ball State University for help.

"We thought we'd try one more outcry and see if we can organize some kind of stork hunt," Bechtel said. "We'd just like to have his remains back for his memorial."

"Gregory Peck," the six-foot-tall, wooden stork that once perched on the birthing clinic's front lawn, was reported stolen in November after staff discovered the bird had been taken during the night, Bechtel said in a previous interview.

The clinic has ordered a new stork to replace the missing one, she said.

"Now we just have a quandary about what to name the new stork," she said. "Perhaps, if we found 'Gregory,' we could name it after that person."
