Point guard wins MAC player of the week
Fresh off the best statistical week of her three-year career at Ball State, junior point guard Kiley Jarrett was named the Mid-American Conference Player of the Week Monday.
Jarrett helped the Cardinals earn two victories this week and averaged 11 points and 9.5 assists.
In an 82-57 win against Central Michigan, Jarrett recorded a career-high 12 assists with five turnovers and added eight points. Saturday, in a 68-47 victory against Bowling Green, the junior tri-captain finished with a team-high 14 points and added seven assists with two turnovers.
Ball State's next game is Wednesday at Ohio. The Cardinals currently lead the MAC West Division with a 5-1 league record. The Bobcats are tied with Bowling Green atop the MAC East Division with a 4-2 conference record.
Eastern Michigan
Former athlete qualifies for national meet
A former Eastern Michigan track and field athlete qualified for the U.S. Indoor National Championships.
Lela V. Nelson beat 2004 Olympic champion Carolina Kluft from Sweden in the long jump by 10-centimeters at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games.
If Nelson, who competed for the Eagles from 2001 to 2005, would win the U.S. Indoor Nationals, she would earn a spot on the U.S. team in the IAAF World Indoor Championships in Valencia, Spain.
At Eastern Michigan, Nelson won the 2004 MAC Most Valuable Performer award and three MAC championships, the 2004 indoor long jump, the 2005 long jump and the 2005 100-meter hurdles. She holds multiple Eastern Michigan records.
Miami
Hockey team ranked No. 1 in national polls
Miami reclaimed the top spot in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll for the first time since Dec. 3.
The Redhawks also took the No. 1 spot in the other men's hockey poll, the USCHO/CSTV poll.
Miami, which is 25-3 this season, received all 34 first-place votes in the USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll. It received 49 of the 50 first place votes in the USCHO/CSTV poll.
The Redhawks are also atop the PairWise Rankings, which mimics the method used to determine who makes the NCAA tournament.
Western Michigan
Athletics department to hold garage sale
Western Michigan will hold a garage sale Saturday inside its arena in conjunction with a men's and women's basketball doubleheader.
The university will sell a variety of athletics apparel, which was worn by Western Michigan student athletes and athletics staff, at a discounted price. The items include jerseys, warm-ups, travel gear and more.
The sale begins at 1 p.m. and the women's game against Ohio is at 2 p.m. The men's game against Bowling Green begins after the women's game concludes.
Toledo
Softball team donates to wildfire victims
The Toledo softball team donated more than $250 worth of toiletries, bedding and footballs to help people who were affected by the California wildfires.
The Rockets also planted more than 1,500 bulbs and cleared brush, weeds and debris as part of a cleanup at the Toledo Metro Park in the fall.
The Rockets have six players from California on their roster. They took a collection from within the team to get the money they used to purchase the goods for the relief effort.
