Academic fraternity receives awards

The academic Gamma Iota Sigma fraternity was awarded with three awards at the Gamma Iota Sigma International Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. during Winter Break.

Gamma Iota Sigma Advisor Dana Kerr said the university had won the Chapter Management Award, Membership Development and Public Relations Award.

The fraternity won the Chapter Management and Membership Development award in 2005, he said.

Kerr said the awards gave the fraternity recognition, especially after competition with more well-known business colleges.

"It gives Ball State a little more name recognitions in the risk management and insurance community," he said.

The fraternity's overall purpose is to promote the risk management, insurance and actuarial sciences major, Kerr said, but the fraternity is open to students of all majors.

Kerr said the academic fraternity acted as other student organizations by providing networking possibilities and fundraising for the community.
