Just as David Letterman presented Ball State University with a top 10 list in September, the Daily News has created its top 10 list for 2007. It is the list of the top 10 best and worst things that happened during the calendar year.
10. Women's basketball team scores bigThe team finished the 2006-2007 season with its highest winning percentage in program history. The team finished with a record of 24-7.
9. Football team to go to the International BowlFor the first time since 1996, the team qualified to go to a bowl game.
8. Tom Collins finds himself in hot waterAthletics Director Tom Collins' resume was questioned after inconsistencies were found in different resumes. The resume Ball State received is correct.
7. President Jo Ann Gora extends her contractPresident Jo Ann Gora's contract with Ball State was extended until June 30, 2012. She will receive a retention bonus if she remains at Ball State until 2012, Burke said. The bonus will equal 20 percent of the sum of Gora's salaries between 2007 and 2012.
6. Smoking ban proposal debated and createdA smoking ban that would limit smoking to 11 locations around campus was proposed to the Board of Trustees. The ban, if approved, would be put into place March 17. Anyone violating the ban would have to pay a $50 fine.
5. NCAA violations are investigated and punishedThe NCAA placed the Ball State athletics department on two years probation Oct. 16 for infractions of multiple teams. If there is another major violation, the NCAA will likely look at the number of teams that are on probation.
4. Blizzard freezes Muncie and Ball StateThe Feb. 14 blizzard brought Muncie the third-largest snowfall in 60 years. Classes were canceled for two days after 10.5 and 11 inches of snow fell.
3. Letterman comes to campus for first time in decadesDavid Letterman visited Ball State Sept. 7 for the opening of the David Letterman Communication and Media Building. An estimated crowd of 5,000 people came to see and hear Letterman speak. He had a top 10 list for Ball State.
2. Ball State gets new face lift with building blitzPark Hall was dedicated Aug. 22. The $27.8 million, 164,000-square-foot building that began construction in August 2004 can house 506 residents. Scheumann Stadium finished construction for the football season. Woodworth Complex's dining facilities were redone and reopened this fall.
1. Ronny Thompson debacle makes national newsFormer men's basketball coach Ronny Thompson resigned after racist notes were found in his office. An investigation of the athletics department to see if it was a hostile environment took place after Thompson's resignation.
