SVS collects toys for 120 kids

Organization helps Muncie children with Angel Tree project

Students who want to get some extra volunteer hours or enjoy some holiday spirit will be wrapping gifts donated to Muncie children.

Coordinator Heidi Morrow said the wrapping will be Tuesday and Wednesday from 1 to 5 p.m. in the Student Volunteer Services office in the Ball State University L.A. Pittenger Student Center Room 118.

Morrow said the volunteers should have a good time while they are working.

"We decorate the office all Christmasy and serve hot chocolate and snacks and play holiday music," Morrow said.

The presents were turned in unwrapped and the students who volunteer will be wrapping them to go to each child, Morrow said.

"We had 120 children and each gets a toy, clothing and a book," Morrow said. "The children asked for specific things."

There were hundreds of toys donated and some children will get more than one, Morrow said.

There were rattles and hand-held toys donated for infants and younger children and a couple of CD players for older children, Morrow said.

Morrow said there were a lot of requests for Hannah Montana dolls and Cabbage Patch dolls.

After the wrapping is finished, SVS will take the gifts to Family Child Services for the child's social worker to give them, Morrow said.

Junior Amber Davis donated games, scarves, markers and other items to the Angel Tree.

Davis said she picked items she wanted to give because the donations had been so successful, all the people had been picked off the Angel Tree.

"When we went, they had run out of people to adopt so we had to sign up to donate extra items," Davis said. "At least all the people had been picked."

Davis said she decided to donate because a friend had.

"I definitely think it's a good idea to donate," Davis said. "It's not expensive stuff, and the kids don't have any of it."

All the spots are filled for students to volunteer, but if students want to sign up, many people drop out, Morrow said.

Students can sign up through the SVS Web site, Morrow said.
