Tony Award-winning musical 'Hairspray' visits Emens Auditorium Monday

Day after day students often start to feel like the world is passing them by while following the same old routine, watching the same television shows.

If this is you, then perhaps you would enjoy seeing "Hairspray;" it may even help end the streak of nothingness, at least for the two hours and 30 minutes it will play.

"Hairspray" is a classic Broadway musical based on a 1988 film about two girls trying to make their way into the wild world of stardom. The main character, who is a "pleasantly plump" teenager accused of having a big heart and even bigger dreams, Tracy Turnblad, and her best friend Penny Pingleton run home everyday after school to catch their favorite TV program, the "Corny Collins Show." The two go ecstatic with joy and excitement when the show announces it will have auditions in the girls' town. The girls put on their dancing shoes and do their best to get a part.

Q & A with Bob Meyer, director of Emens Auditorium:

Q. Why did you decide to bring "Hairspray" to Ball State?

A. This was a natural program choice. "Hairspray" is an upbeat, entertaining book musical, that has an excellent message about acceptance and diversity. I advocated its selection, which also received strong support from the advisory program committee.

Q. How many people do you expect to attend the production?

A. I fully anticipate a sold out performance. Predicated upon advance sales and student interest, we should have no difficulty filling Emens Auditorium. More than likely, students that procrastinate will not be able to attend.

Q. Why do you think Ball State students will like the play?

A. I have found that our student body is fairly sophisticated and many know a great deal about hit broadway productions. The score is catchy, leaving audience members with melody lines that will stay with them. People leave this show feeling uplifted and positive about the human spirit.
