Ball State sports 2007 report cards

Men's GolfDespite losing five seniors in May, the men's golf team showcased its young and upcoming talent during the fall season. Led by junior Brian Maurer, the Cardinals best finish was fourth out of 17 teams at the Earl Yestingsmeier Invitational in Muncie. In six tournaments, Ball State finished in the top five three times. Head coach Mike Fleck, however, had a hard time deciding who to start for the Cardinals, The inconsistency and high first round scores hurt the Cardinals in all of its tournaments.Grade: C+

Women's GolfThe women's golf team won its first tournament of the season at the Thunder Fall Invitational and finished in the top five in three of its five fall tournaments. In addition, freshman Brittany Kelly shot a 3-under-par 69 to set a school record for the lowest 18-hole score in the first round of the MAC Tournament Preview Sept. 10. Prior to this season, Ball State's highest finish in the MAC Tournament was third place, including a sixth-place finish to end the 2007 spring season.Grade: A-

Men's TennisOther than having two freshmen win their individual flights in the opening tournament of the season and sporadically finishing with good results throughout the season, the men's tennis team did not finish up to expectations this season. Failing to win key singles matches and zero doubles matches in two tournaments, the team did not perform up to its standards established in its MAC tournament history.Grade: C

Women's TennisThe Ball State women's tennis team used its fall season to experiment with its players. With the changes, the team lacked a consistent lineup. The Cardinals also lacked a consistent winner as none of the Ball State players won multiple events during the fall season. The Cardinals did get wins in the flights from sophomore Sophie Quist at the Ball State Invitational and freshman Hayley Hall and senior Jennifer Pollack at the Memphis Invitational.Grade: C

SoccerBall State went 13-5-2 and 9-1-1 in the Mid-American Conference to win its second consecutive regular season MAC championship. The Cardinals' defense had a 664 minute shutout streak, which was a school record and second best in conference history. However, Ball State was upset in the MAC tournament for the second consecutive year as Bowling Green State University advanced to the championship game on penalty kicks 3-0 after a scoreless tie through two overtimes.Grade: B

Women's VolleyballTo put it simply, the Ball State women's volleyball suffered through its worst season in program history. The Cardinals went 5-25, breaking both the lowest amount of wins in a season, 9 in 1984, and the most losses in a season, 24 in 1980. However, 10 of 13 players were underclassman and the team had a new head coach for the first time since 1989. Also, players said the new coach, Dave Boos, uses a high detail style of play that takes a long time to learn perhaps explaining the team's struggles offensively.Grade: D-

Cross CountryThe 2007 season was dominated by sophomore Ali Bishel for the Ball State cross country team. Bishel led the Cardinals at all of their meets this season. She became the first Ball State runner to qualify for the national championships since Jill Scully in 2004, and like Scully, Bishel finished 52 at the meet. Bishel also finished second at the MAC championship meet. As a team, the Cardinals finished in the top 10 in four of their five scored meets this fall.Grade: B

Field HockeyThe MAC coaches picked the Ball State field hockey team to finish second in the league in preseason. However, an offense that was outshot in all but two games kept the Cardinals from fulfilling those expectations. Despite the individual brilliance of two sophomores - forward Brooke MacGillivary finished 2nd in the league in goals and was named first team all-MAC, and goalkeeper Tiffany Shifflett made the fourth-most saves in Ball State history - the Cards finished 5-13, 3-7 in the league and were bounced in the first round of the MAC tournament.Grade: C-
