The women's volleyball team lost its program-worst 25th game of the season in the Mid-American Conference tournament Tuesday to end its season.
Northern Illinois University (14-17, 7-9 MAC) defeated Ball State University (5-25, 4-12 MAC) in four games, 30-20, 27-30, 30-19, 30-28, to advance to the MAC quarterfinal against No. 1 Ohio University. The Cardinals failed to advance to at least the quarterfinals of the conference tournament for the first time since 1991 when it lost to Miami University.
The loss brought coach Dave Boos' first season as the Cardinals' leader to an end. Ball State had losing streaks of 13 and nine matches this season, the two worst streaks in team history.
Also, the five wins was the worst in the program's history, breaking the mark set by the 1988 team that finished 11-12.
In addition, Ball State's four MAC wins was the fewest in school history since the team went 3-5 in 1989.
Sophomore Julie Breivogel led Ball State with 17 kills in the match. Freshman Alyssa Rio led the Ball State defense with 27 digs. Senior Angie Parrell had 43 assists and 14 digs in her final match as a Cardinal.
As a team, the Cardinals had a .077 attacking percentage.
