Tech Time improves facility; Grand opening Wednesday

Plush furniture, flatscreen TV greet students at UCS

Plush furniture and a flat-screen TV now greet students visiting University Computer Services' Tech Time.

Sarah LaChat, coordinator or technology documentation and support services, said Tech Time is a computer support service for students. Computer experts will assist students in their technological dilemmas, she said.

She said the renovations included painting the walls a more noticeable lime green, and re-flooring the room. UCS decided to overhaul Tech Time to better serve students' needs, she said.

"We wanted to make the space more comfortable," LaChat said. "With some [computer] problems, students could be stuck there for some time, now they have some things to help pass the time."

Jim Lowe, director of engineering and operations, said from a facilities standpoint, the renovations were a success.

"The crews did a great job," Lowe said. "It's a nice, attractive area, and it appears to be well received by the students."

LaChat said UCS made other improvements besides the TV and new furniture. She said they upgraded the computers, which included purchasing new MACs.

"It's all pretty high-end now," she said.

Tech Time has already been re-opened to students, but LaChat said they will have a grand opening, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday. She said refreshments would be served and students would get the opportunity to explore the remodeled area.

Lowe said he thought the university would continue projects similar to Tech Time and Bracken Library's Bookmark Café.

"It's really becoming a standard around here to put these little construction implants around campus, and from my standpoint, they are a success," he said.
