Students, faculty share opinions of Ball State's newest addition

As the newest addition to the Ball State University academic calendar approaches, some students are beginning to finalize their pre-Thanksgiving Break schedules to accommodate canceled classes. Some students intend on going to class, and others see Fruesday as a holiday in itself and a reason to skip class.

One thing that isn't as certain is whether Happy Friday Guy will skate down McKinley Avenue tomorrow.

Although Happy Friday Guy's plans for Fruesday are still up in the air, he said that Fruesday was just another chance to celebrate.

"Treat Fruesday like any other Friday," he said. "This one, you'll just be more thankful to get ready for the season."

However, the invention of Fruesday has its less-than-thankful critics. Timothy Berg, assistant professor of history, said that Fruesday was inconvenient for teachers and students alike. Lessons plans become more difficult when Tuesday-Thursday classes don't meet for 12 days and Monday-Wednesday-Friday classes are scheduled back-to-back, he said.

"I don't like Fruesday because there's less time to prepare for the Monday and Wednesday classes," he said. "I understand why, but it seems overly complicated. I'd rather have Saturday classes."

Fruesday is also an inconvenience to some students who carpool home because they don't have a car on campus. Sophomore Juli Digate relies on hitching a ride with her hometown friends, but because her friends' Fruesday classes were cancelled, they are going home early, she said.

"I dislike Fruesday because I'd have to skip classes to get home," she said. "I have no way to get home by myself."

Sophomore Margaret Beymer is in a similar situation. Without a means to get home, she must wait for a ride, she said. During her idle time, she plans on doing some homework and talking with friends who she doesn't normally have enough time to talk to, she said.

"I don't really care [about Fruesday] because I'm going to go to class if it's Friday or it's Tuesday, but I'm kind of laid back," Beymer said. "I guess if I had Saturday finals, I'd be happy."
