Order of Omega helps with Candy Cane Lane

BSU organizations assist Cornerstone Center after it rejects Mattel donations

The Order of Omega and other fraternities and sororities spread some holiday cheer by donating toys to the Cornerstone Center for the Arts during the "Candy Cane Lane" event on Nov. 17.

Terry Whitt Bailey, president and CEO for Cornerstone Center, said the event was for children of any economic status to enjoy the Christmas season by receiving gifts and visiting Santa Claus.

"I thought that would be a fun thing to see the fraternities and sororities at Ball State to work in their letters and decorate," she said.

In past years, Mattel, Inc. donated toys for the event, she said, but the center decided not to ask for donations because of the recent toy recalls

"If I was a parent that came to Candy Cane Lane and received a free Mattel toy, I would have questioned it," she said.

The event, which began four years ago, accommodated about 800 children, Bailey said.

Bailey, a former member of Delta Sigma Theta sorority, said she was pleased not only with how the event had gone, but by the cooperation of fraternities and sororities in decorating the 125,000-square-foot area for event.

"We can't do these types of events without volunteers," she said.

Order of Omega President Brian Starkel said the organization was able to raise 145 toys its first year.

"We found this as a great opportunity to connect with the Muncie community," he said, "and we are going to continue to use this to connect with the Muncie community in the future."

Starkel said the Ball State University Greek chapters such as Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Nu, Alpha Omicron Pi and Pi Omega helped with the event.
