Operation Pull Over begins Sunday

Officers to enforce safe family travel for holiday season

Several police departments in Indiana, including Ball State University police, will start the next section of Operation Pull Over on Sunday.

Muncie Police Sergeant Brad Arey said the focus of Operation Pull Over was extra safety.

This blitz of the operation is called Safe Family Travel, which will be traffic enforcement for a safe holiday season, Arey said.

Sheriff's Department Lieutenant Arlain Johnson said the main purpose of the operation was to save lives.

"We are going to make sure people have their children properly restrained and that there is no impaired driving," Johnson said.

Arey said the blitz would begin Sunday and runs until Nov. 24.

"Throughout the week an extra officer will be on the road focusing on seat belt patrol and DUI patrol," Arey said.

During the week from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. the Muncie Police Department will focus on seat belt patrol and on weekends from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. it will focus on DUI patrol, Arey said.

"It is a proven fact that more injuries happen when people are not buckled up," Arey said.

There is more alcohol consumption around the holidays, Arey said, so the department has an extra officer on patrol during these times.

Johnson said the difference between Operation Pull Over and regular patrol was regular police officers who patrol are required to answer calls when they come in. Operation Pull Over officers have specific objectives, he said.

"We want people to operate vehicles on the road and be safe," Johnson said. "We want people not to be impaired while driving."
