FOOTBALL: Cardinals, Huskies to begin 'trophy game'

Even before this year's football game between Ball State University and Northern Illinois University, the two schools announced next year's match up will have an extra incentive for the two sides to play for.

Instead of a year of bragging rights, next year's winner will be rewarded with "The Bronze Stalk," according to a press release written by Ball State Associate Athletic Director Joe Hernandez. According to the press release, DeKalb artist Renee Bemis will design the trophy, which will bear logos of both schools on its wooden base.

The two programs played their first game Oct. 4, 1941, a contest that finished in a 6-6 tie. The Cardinals and Huskies have met 35 times during their rivalry, including the past 11 seasons. Ball State beat Northern Illinois 27-21 this year to earn its seventh win of the season, and the Cardinals own a 19-14-2 advantage against the Huskies.

Traditionally, the road team has seen a healthy amount of success. Ball State holds an 12-6-2 record in games played at Northern Illinois, while the Huskies have an 8-7 record in games played at Scheumann Stadium.

The two teams are currently searching for a corporate sponsor for the rivalry, according to the press release.
