Ball State University students were trapped in an elevator in Studebaker West Complex about 8 p.m. Wednesday, said Sgt. Terrell Smith of University Police.
"Two people, students, were stuck on the eighth floor," he said. "The outer door [of the elevator shaft] was open, but the inner door was closed."
The students used the elevator's emergency call button to alert the police dispatcher, Smith said, and about eight firefighters and police officers arrived within minutes of the students' call.
After emergency responders arrived, the students were rescued in a matter of seconds, he said.
"We just hit a button on the doors [to open them]," Smith said.
They locked the eighth floor elevator door and placed signs on the elevator to warn students not to use it, he said.
Studebaker West desk staff declined to comment.
