WOMEN'S VOLLEYBALL: Cards suffer weekend losses

Ball State drops two, extends losing streak in conference play

After hitting .207 in the first game of the match, the Ball State University women's volleyball team suffered a relapse offensively hitting -.044 and -.100 in games two and three of a 3-0 (36-34, 30-14, 30-24) loss to Bowling Green State University Saturday.

The results weren't much better Friday for the Cardinals. Miami University defeated Ball State 3-1 (30-26, 29-31, 30-18, 30-19).

With the two losses, Ball State fell to 2-8 in the Mid-American Conference and 3-19 overall.

The Cardinals had 21 kills in game one but had 17 combined kills in games two and three against Bowling Green.

In game one the Cardinals had multiple points that could have clinched the game for them but failed to do so. Then at 34-35 the Falcons served a ball that many Cardinal players and coaches thought was going long. Instead the ball bounced right on the line, giving the Falcons their first serving ace and clinching the game.

"It's a really tough situation," coach Dave Boos said. "You want to be aggressive. I thought it was going to be out too."

In game two the Cardinals were down one point 9-10 but then allowed Bowling Green to go a 20-5 run to close out the game. Aggression was what Boos said was missing.

"We played fearful volleyball," Boos said. "If we are passing tentatively and hitting tentatively you'll have a hard time scoring points ... We've had the same deficiencies for the whole year. We have plenty of practice to teach us how to play. We have to be fearless, we have to go out and push people."

At 2-8 in the MAC, the Cardinals are unlikely to be sitting atop the MAC West at regular season's end; however, senior setter Angie Parrell said the team still has eyes set on a MAC championship.

"The way it works we can still win a MAC championship," Parrell said. "Regular season really only affects where you place in the tournament and from there you can do anything."
